Ahmed Akkari was born in 1978 in Lebanon.

The family: father, mother and the five children obtained asylum in Denmark, where they moved to Hurup in Thy. Ahmed was about seven years old.

In 1990 the family went home to Lebanon, but returned the following year because the children didn’t like being in the country.

In 2003 Ahmed Akkari began to teach on the Selam School, a Muslim free school, in Brabrand. Today he’s studying at Denmark’s Pedagogical University in Copenhagen.

In 2005 Akkari became a Danish citizen. He is married to a Lebanese woman. The couple has had their request for family reunification in Denmark denied, because the authorities estimate that its combined ties to Lebanon is stronger than to Denmark.

The wife and their almost 1-year old daughter still live in Lebanon. Here Ahmed Akkari is following Islamic studies.

WHAT THE HELL HAS HAPPENED TO THAT GUY?

The friends bought a football and wrote all their names on it, when Ahmed Akkari moved back to Lebanon in 1990.

They were fond of the little dark-haired boy, who spoke so excellent Danish, even after a short time in Denmark.

THE FRIENDS ARE WONDERING

The friends are wondering today over the little man, who as some kind of prophet demands that Denmark’s Prime Minister goes live on Arabic television with him, Ahmed Akkari, so there can be quiet in the Middle East.

“I have been thinking, what the Hell has happened to that guy”, says one who hasn’t seen Ahmed Akkari since 1990.

“I don’t remember him as particularly religious” says another, who used to visit the Akkari family, when they lived in Hurup from 1985 to 1990.

“When we speak of integration, one could hardly appear better integrated than Akkari: He speaks good Danish. Played soccer with all of us. He was a part of the fellowship, just as Allan and Jens, and whatever our names were”. “He also went along to soccer tournaments, where we slept out, and I don’t suppose, one is allowed to do so, if one is ultra-religious?”

AKKARIS DOUBLE DEALING

“When I debated integration with my friends, he was always the model of one who was super-integrated. This is in sharp contrast to the image one has of him today The image of Ahmed Akkari, who is still pursuing the apology he already has received becomes more complete day by day.”

Now, former friends and classmates and Akkari’s former headmaster are in a merciless way contributing to reveal Ahmed Akkari’s double dealing to the Danish society.

WENT HOME VOLUNTARILY

Seven-year old Ahmed came to Denmark in 1985, where the family lived in Hurup in Thy, until the soccer club paid for a farewell reception with French fries and soda water in the clubhouse in 1990.

The reason was that the family themselves wanted to go back to Lebanon, but already one year later, Ahmed Akkari and his family were back in Denmark again.

But now they couldn’t obtain asylum.

This resulted in Ahmed Akkari and the family often appearing in North-Jutlandic media as a family, who didn’t want to return to, one was led to believe, their terrible native country, which in the mean time had become peaceful after 15 years of civil war.

TWO TONGUES

As an example, Aalborg Stiftstidende printed an article February 1994 about the Akkari family with the title “I am a Dane”.

The “Dane” was Ahmed Akkari, then 15 years old.

The curious part is that the “Dane” at this time had lived as much time in his native country Lebanon as in Denmark, and yet Akkari said:

“I don’t want to go back to Lebanon; it’s not my country anymore. I am a Dane now, it’s only when I see myself in the mirror, I remember that I’m a foreigner.”

HUMANITARIAN RESIDENCE

In the article, the journalist described how the family had hung up paintings of Danish farmhouses and Danish pixies on the walls. On the Walkman they played “Oles nye autobil”, “Jeg en gård mig bygge vil” and “Jegved en lærkerede”.

It wasn’t only Aalborg Stiftstidende that swallowed the tear-jerking story. Birthe Weiss, at that time Minister for the Interior, subsequently gave the Akkari family a humanitarian residence permit.

When the permit was secured, it was suddenly a totally different Akkari, who appeared.
