Susan Sarandon: Olympic Athlete?

Which of these people do not belong?

For the first time eight women carried in the Olympic flag during Torino’s opening ceremonies. Several of the women were famous Olympic athletes but one stood out: Susan Sarandon?

Other fellow flag carriers were Olympic medal winners Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco, Manuela Di Centa of Italy, Maria Mutola of Mozambique and Italian actress and film legend Sophia Loren. But the group also included Chilean writer Isabel Allende, Nobel Peace-prize winner Wangari Maathai of Kenya, and Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam.

Presumably Sarandon was selected because of her part Italian heritage (Welsh-Italian) and because she is a celebrity (dubious) but it also appears the IOC’s long history of political correctness played a role as Sarandon’s infamous human rights proclivities seem to have been a key factor in including her in the group.

  1. I just knew that I wouldn’t be much interested in watching the Olympics after Sarandon was identified during the opening ceremonies. Why should she be included along with some very notable women for this honor, other than her far left of center politics? And apparently the only American?
    After all the bruhaha during the Cold War concerning leaving politics at home for the sake of sport and botherhood, this
    inclusion of Sarandon demonstrates the true theme that the IOC wishes the Games to have. No surprise: America bad, Bush and Cheney Nazis, well-healed actors and left wing pundits most good. Trouble is, most Americans don’t agree with the aforesaid.
