Danish Imams Busted!

*** NEANDERNEWS EXCLUSIVE ***

Do these two photos look similiar?

Bogus Mohammed Cartoon
Pig Calling Contestant

They should because they are the same! No, not a satire of Mohammed nor any other sacred Islamic figure but a photo of Jacques Barrot, a pig squealing contestant at the French Pig-Squealing Championships in Trie-sur-Baise’s annual festival. NeanderNews discovered this photo, taken by Bob Edme of AP, posted on an August 15, 2005 AP story seen here on MSNBC’s website.

As Gateway Pundit, Counter Terrorism Blog and others have reported Danish Imam Ahmad Abu Ladan, leader of The Islamic Society of Denmark, toured the middle east to create awareness of supposed anti-Islamic cartoons and included the above black and white photo as well as two other undocumented examples. Akhmad Akkari, spokesman of the tour, explained that the three drawings had been added to “give an insight in how hateful the atmosphere in Denmark is towards Muslims.”

Akkari claimed he does not know the origin of the three pictures. He said they had been sent anonymously to Danish Muslims. However, when Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet asked if it could talk to these Muslims, Akkari refused to reveal their identity. BBC World aired a story on 1-30-2006 showing the three non-published images and claimed they had been published in Denmarks Jyllands-Posten, these images however had never been published in Jyllands-Posten.

NeanderNews wonders if Jacques knows what he has started? A big kudos to ‘The Celtic Semite’ for this great lead.

  1. Neanderman- as far as relevance, I think the original discovery of this photo that was added to ‘Danish Imam’s Islamic Rage Campaign Tour December 2005′ posed many questions. The first one should have been, “Is this photo even a satire on Muhammad? And if not, where did the photo come from?” And now that we know where it came from, it poses other thoughts. One is, “If any random rendering or photo with porcine features is considered this dangerous in the Islamic world, how close are we to dialog with them?”

  14. […] Yeah right! Het is dus een vaghe kopie van een foto waar de Fransman Jacques Barrot op afgebeeld staat. 25. As Neanderman’s operative, I have to say that some of you commentators are missing a point. It is quite possible that some bigot sent a copy of the photo to a Muslim’s home and scrawled the name of the Islamic prophet onto it. This certainly would constitute as harassment. So what we’ve discovered here is the original origin of the photo, not the truth of how it was actually used. I think it’s important to keep the first possibility open. However, I think at this point it’s equally or even more possible (considering Akkari’s motives) that he found the image himself. Now matter what the case may be though, it’s still relevant to the current rage around the world. The fact is that porcine images themselves have become dangerous. The fact that Islamofascists around the world will probably, when they work up enough rage, now call for poor Jacques’s dismemberment no matter how much he provides hard proof that he is not satirizing Mohammad in the photo, but is at a pig squealing contest. People everywhere could be in danger if they teach nursery school children that cows say “moo” and pigs say “oink”. I can see the Arab Newspaper headlines now, “children in U.S. and Europe are taught to revile Mohamed by saying “oink”. It’s as if the existence of pigs should be outlawed (see http://lostbudgie.blogspot.com/2005/10/winnie-poohs-friend-piglet-banned-in.html) for this reality.

  28. Celtic Semite, you’re correct that it’s possible that the image was sent to a Danish Muslim as you stated. But the burden of proof on that would seem to lay with the imam making this claim. And it’s not at all clear to me that he is representing it as such. By including it (and the other two non-published images) with the newspaper cartoons, the inference is that this was one of the published cartoons. Assuming that the “bonus’ images were indeed mailed to some Muslims by some individual pranksters: are we to condemn entire nations, even civilizations, because of a few miscreants? Only a totalitarian government like Red China would be capable of controlling its population sufficiently to prevent such stray harassment. So in effect these protesters are trying to force the West to impose a totalitarian regime on itself so as to prevent such “outrages” from occurring in the future. A regime, incidentally, like the ones they live under.

Ironically, of course, in many Muslim countries there is little or no freedom of speech or religion — other than for Islam. (And not even for certain types of Islam — for example, Shiites are persecuted in Saudi Arabia.) And speaking of Arabia, I wonder how many Westerners know that any form of worship other than the Wahhabist form of Islam is strictly forbidden. This one-sided demand for absolute respect for Islam in the West, while denying any other form of worship in the Middle East, must be spotlighted more, to show the West what vision radical Muslims have for the world.

  45. Congrats on the scoop. The squealing photo is front page material today in “Ekstra Bladet” one of the two danish tabloids. You can see the front page here, but accessing the article requires purchase: http://ekstrabladet.dk/VisArtikel.asp?PageID=291489 I didn’t see the photo mentioned on front page of the two other papers I checked. Maybe on their web sites or tomorrow.

It reads “Danish imams exposed: PHOTO HOAX” I bought a copy “just for you” but haven’t seen neandernews mentioned anywhere (come on, you’re just a blogger). There is an editors column under the title “Swinishness in the name of Allah” (Swinishness is approx. mess or (malicious) dirty deeds in danish). On pp 4-5 there’s an article under the headline “Pig Picture Pure Hoax”. They’ve talked to mr. French Pig (no offense meant ;-) ) to the AP photographer and to cartoon-touring spokesman Ahmed Akkari. They were all surprised.

Ekstra Bladet is critical of immigration in general and the touring Imams in particular. This line is followed in the editorial column speaking of “old, two-tongued Abu Laban and the young smooth Ahmed Akkari”. “As Ekstra Bladets reporters yesterday presented the embarassing revelation to Ahmed Akkari the little imam didn’t feel like commenting at all. Anyway, what was he supposed to say? “I apologize”? The phrase he all the time demands that the prime minister and Jyllands-Posten repeat…” “Ahmed Akkari loves playing a role in the chaotic situation he helped create”.

Jacques Marrot (Francais en rose) is “schocked” and states: “I don’t want that picture used for propaganda in one form or the other, be it for or against Islam”. “If the picture has been used as some kind of propaganda I’ll have some lawyers look at the case”. AP photographer Bob Edme is “astonished”. “I can hardly remember that picture but it sounds completely bizarre”.

Ahmed Akkari is “ambushed” with the picture in an appointed interview with Ekstra Bladet, but basically says “no comments”. (EB brings the whole interview, but apparently he has already beforehand decided not to give any comments since he doesn’t trust them to “bring it in the right context”.

Jacques Marrot finished third in the competition.

  46. I should add that Ekstra Bladet nowhere mentions the possibility that someone might in fact have sent this picture to a danish moslem. I find the idea entirely plausible, but of course it’s weakened by the Imams’ refusal to identify the recipients.

And then there’s still the issue of malice vs. incompetence, but that’s a pretty weak defense from someone on a cartoon crusade to provoke backlash.

First, if the person in the photo is Muslim, then the photo actually depicts a muslim immigrant taking part in French society, and being accepted, not an image of hatred or prejudice towards muslims.

  60. […] That picture, it turns out, is far from being a satire of Mohammad or any other sacred Islamic figure. It is a picture of a French man at the French Pig-Squealing Championships in Trie-sur-Baise’s annual festival. Ahmed Abu-Laban has claimed these extra images were from threatening letters and promised to produce the letters for various news services. So far, copies of the letters have not been produced. The defilement of Mohammad’s image by Ahmed Abu-Laban is far the greater offence in this instance. By deliberately bringing this, and other much more offensive depictions of Mohammad and Islam, into the fray, Ahmed Abu-Laban himself must be held accountable by Muslims claiming offense at the set of cartoons published by the Danish newspaper. That is, if they are at all interested in retaining any credibility for their objections. Doubtful, as the issue isn’t about cartoons. Its deeper and broader. Again from Jesus in the Checkout Line: As Eric Raymond observes, “…serious is deadly. Any spiritual tradition that can’t laugh at itself, that can’t step outside its own dogmas and admit how absurd it can look from the outside, has already become a cancer.” The problem is, they are not so much deadly to themselves as they are to anyone who stands in their way. Such serious spirituality manifests itself as subtle religious persecution and escalates to violent crusades and religious wars. […]

T’would appear that Akkari is pretty good at doing what he does. He has replaced Ahmed Said Kassem as spokesman and no-body speaks with the press except Akkari - not even Abu Laban.

Akkari on the other hand “punishes” BT and Ekstra Bladet by refusing to speak to them. Another example of hypocrisy - didn’t they claim they went to the Middle East because they weren’t able to voice their complaints at home?

There’s a picture in today’s Ekstra Bladet (p. 5) where Akkari shows the pig to two foreign journalists.

At least one of A’s extra images, supposedly of Mohammed as a pig, was in fact, nothing of the sort. It was a humorous picture of a Frenchman at a pig-calling contest. The point here is that the Danish imams, on their “lets’s make a big stink” mission, included extraordinarily offensive pictures that had nothing to do with the Danish newspaper’s cartoons. It’s clear that these gratuitous and dishonest additions contributed to the outrage that developed. […]

British and American (and presumably other European) Muslims will be made to feel bad by other Muslims when they tell them that they’ve been diss’d. Why on earth should people not be expected to feel pain? What kind of infantilization is going on here? Why should we protect them from such “pain,” rather than expect them to reply intelligently to their Muslim brethren, and tell them that their infantile behavior in rioting over these pictures is embarrassing Muslims the world over. Or, better yet, tell them that they’ve been worked into a fever pitch by dishonest Muslims who faked really disgusting pictures of the Prophet to provoke them. Of course, that would be treating the Muslims in Europe as responsible members of the society. True, readers and viewers who have been following the story might well have wanted to judge the cartoons’ impact, humor, and offensiveness for themselves, and the press might therefore have felt some responsibility to provide that opportunity. But the public does not have a right to read or see whatever it wants no matter what the cost, and the cartoons are in any case widely available on the Internet. […]

[…] The first time this nonsense erupted, you’ll recall, was when Jyllands-Poste cultural editor Flemming Rose learned of a writer unable to find an illustrator willing to draw the Muslim prophet Muhammed for a book project, and decided to draw attention to the underlying issues by calling upon artists to do just that. I don’t believe Rose to be responsible for the idiocy that followed. Indeed, the pictures he published lay dormant for several months, and had even been published in an Egyptian newspaper without incident, when a group of Danish Muslims began circulating a booklet that not only reprinted the cartoons but also three other, much more inflammatory and fraudulant images, on a tour of the Middle East, which were then used for propoganda purposes by the tyrannical leaders of nations where unauthorized demonstrations can lead to jail, torture and even death — there are twisted hands all over the initial cartoon eruptions, but they don’t belong to Flemming Rose. I believe that to conclude otherwise is to essentially give in to intimidation by religious extremists seeking to cow others into deferring to a Medieval sensibility that regards submission to Islamic beliefs by followers and non-believers alike as paramount to co-existence. With two possible exceptions, the cartoons weren’t intended to be disrespectful of Muslim beliefs, and even the two dicier images were clearly commenting on the undeniable propensity of fanatics to use bloody violence to achieve their aims. Even if the cartoons were distasteful, it shouldn’t have mattered once push came to shove. I wouldn’t defend the cartooning of Mike Diana in a Journal review to save my life, but I’ll happily defend it against Florida bluenoses looking to throw the poor bastard in jail. Western civilization is based around the individual’s right to express contrary opinions, and we abandon that right at our peril. […]
