The Tribe in Torino
Speaking of Sasha you might be asking yourself “Who are the other Jewish Olympic athletes?” OK, Mark Spitz doesn’t count, we are talking Torino here. Well after perusing An Unsealed Room I just happened to stumble across this list from article in Jewish World Review titled The Tribe Goes to Torino.
The surprise for me was Ben Agosto of ice dancing fame. I was thinking he was Italian but Ben’s father, Angel, is Puerto Rican and Catholic but his mother, Miriam, is Jewish and her family originally came from Rumania and Russia. OK, half Jew but 100% athlete. Check out the list for other interesting tidbits.

Ahhhhhhhh! Neanderleans, please don’t think anybody who sports a red string around their wrists is in with the Madumma/Britney crowd. I have some friends who both wear the red string And practice traditional Judaism. Instead of highlighting the red string, just put her last name in BOLD- Cohen is actually the oldest Jewish name on the entire planet. There are Cohens from Europe, North Africa, and of course the Middle East. Cohen, means “priest”- “Cohain” in the Hebrew Bible. To this day, they have special symbolic duties in the Synagogue, such as having the first Aliyah (blessing) at the Torah on Shabbat, as well as giving the blessing over the people on certain holidays. A few years back, geneticist determined that over 80% of those male Jews thought to be Cohains did indeed share the exact same Y chromosome leading back to one single male descendent that lived at the time we believe Aaron (the first priest) lived. Since the chromosome (as well as Cohain duties) are only passed through the male, if Sasha doesn’t have any brothers the legacy will end with her.

Thanks for the ‘Cohain’ history, very interesting. I did some further research and it turns out that Semites of a Celtic background also have special duties, including busting Kabbalah falsehoods.
